The History and Importance of the Truck

The truck is a vehicle designed to carry goods and passengers. The truck has a larger and heavier engine; more powerful with stronger suspensions than the conventional automobiles.

The truck is larger and heavier than the conventional automobiles and differs in basic construction. Between 1700 and 1800 several steam powered vehicles and carriages were built and used in Europe. In 1896, Gottlieb Daimler in Germany built the first gasoline-powered vehicles for hauling cargo and in 1898 the Winton Company of Cleveland, Ohio, became one of the first manufacturers of trucks in the United States. In 1903 the first truck show in the United States was held in New York City. In 1911 the first transcontinental coast-to-coast trip by a truck was completed in 66 days. As the need for trucks increases, more innovations are added to the technology of the truck; from steam powered engines to gasoline and now diesel powered. Today, trucks are equipped with heaters, air conditioners, sleeper compartments, and a strong engine to make haulage with trucks much easier.                         Old Pickup truck on by Joe Shlabotnik

There are different types of trucks:

(1) The lighter trucks which weigh up to 6,300 kg have a unibody construction where the body provides the structural support for the vehicle and usually used for light hauling. Light trucks include pick up trucks, mini vans, full size vans and sports utility vans (SUV). Light trucks use the same kind of engine, transmissions and brakes as the automobile cars.

(2) The medium trucks (some with unibody like the lighter trucks) weigh up to 15,000 kg and are used for local freight delivery, dump and garbage trucks etc. Medium trucks have larger engine capacity and a second rear axle for carrying additional weight.

(3) The heavy trucks weigh over 15,000 kg and are primarily used to pull trailers. Such trucks are called semitrailers or tractor-trailer trucks. As the name implies, heavy trucks have the largest frames powered by diesel engines. They have multispeed transmissions with as many as 17 speed gears and a reverse. Most of the heavy trucks have two rear drive axles called dual tandems, each of which has dual tires on each side.     Mack truck on by indigoprime

The light and medium trucks are mostly powered by gasoline while the heavy trucks use large diesel engines. Trucks are usually constructed on a strong metal frame called the chassis which supports the weight of the truck. The light and most of the medium trucks are grouped under straight trucks because both the body or cab and the cargo compartments are mounted on the same chassis, while in the heavy tractor-trailer trucks, the engine and the cab are part of the tractor unit; the trailer is a separate detachable unit that has its own suspension and wheels with axles and is joined to the tractor with a mounting device called a fifth wheel. The brakes on the trailer’s axles have air hoses that attach to the tractor’s brake system, so the tractor and trailer brakes work together. Trailers have their own signal, tail, and brake lights, all of which are powered by the tractor’s electrical system. Its break system is pneumatically operated. The trailer carries the wares while the cab accommodates the driver and two to four people depending on the design of the cab.

What was the name of the vehicle that looked like a van but had a small bed like a pick up truck made in 1970'S? You never see them anymore.
